"Squishy" covers a lot of different toys. Search Amazon for squishies and you'll see slow-rising foam food, tiny mochi animals, gel-filled stress balls, sticky silicone paws and plush hybrids, all lumped together. They feel completely different. This guide breaks down the main types and the brands worth knowing, so you buy the squeeze you actually want.

The main squishy types

1. Slow-rising foam (PU foam)

These are the classic "squishies": breads, fruit, buns, animals and food shapes made of soft polyurethane foam with a painted skin. Squeeze one and it slowly puffs back over several seconds. Brands such as Midou and Glyrnur sell lots of them on Amazon, along with countless no-name sellers. Jumbo versions (giant strawberries, bread loaves) are popular too.

Who it's for: anyone who wants a quiet, calming squeeze. Downside: the painted skin can crack over time, and foam doesn't like water.

2. Mochi squishies (TPR)

Small, rounded, often animal-shaped and slightly translucent. Despite the name, mochi squishies are usually thermoplastic rubber, not foam, so they spring back fast instead of rising slowly. They're sold in big multi-packs (often 20 to 30+ pieces), which makes them a go-to for party favors and goodie bags.

Who it's for: fidgeters who want quick feedback, and parents filling party bags.

3. Gel and maltose stress balls

A thick rubber skin filled with a gel or maltose syrup. They resist your squeeze and ooze slowly back. NeeDoh's Nice Cube is the famous example (see our NeeDoh guide), and Slimygloop Gelli Gels from Horizon Group USA are another best seller. Glitter or "slow-flow" versions add a visual element.

4. Squishmallows Squooshems

From Jazwares, the company behind Squishmallows. Squooshems are about 2 to 2.5-inch squeezable foam versions of Squishmallows characters, sold in blind bags and themed series (for example, a Food series). Designs are random and duplicates are possible, which is part of the collecting appeal. Like blind card packs, they're a natural fit at a card-shop counter.

5. Squishables

Squishable makes round, oversized plush animals and characters. They're plush rather than a squeeze toy, so they're more a cuddly display piece than a fidget. We include them because people searching "squishy" often mean these.

6. Foam faces and novelty squishies

Brands such as ORB (Smushers) make slow-rising faces and novelty shapes. They're fun impulse buys and gag gifts.

7. Classic stress balls

Plain foam or gel balls built for grip and stress relief rather than looks. Firmer resistance, durable, cheap, and good for an office.

How to choose

Check the listing's material line, not just the name. A "mochi" or "gel" name doesn't guarantee how a toy feels.

Care tips

Safety note

Many squishies are labeled for ages 3+, and mini squishies in multi-packs can be small enough to be a choking risk for younger kids. Foam pieces can also be bitten off. Check each listing's age rating, buy from sellers that list safety testing, and supervise young children.

Bottom line

For most people, a slow-rising foam squishy plus a gel stress ball covers both feels. Collectors should look at Squooshems and NeeDoh, and anyone stocking party bags should grab a mochi multi-pack.
