This guide walks through the current models and the handful of accessories that are actually worth adding. We don't list prices here, because console prices have moved several times this year. Which PS5 should you buy?
PS5 with disc drive: the safe default
The standard PS5 with a disc drive plays both downloaded games and physical discs. That matters more than people think. Physical games can be resold, traded, borrowed from friends and bought used for less. If you collect cards, you already get the appeal of owning the physical thing.
Who it's for: most buyers, families, and anyone who likes buying used games.
PS5 Digital Edition: fine if you're truly all-digital
Same games, same performance, no disc slot. You buy everything from the PlayStation Store. It's usually a bit cheaper up front, but you give up used-game savings. Sony sells a separate disc drive that attaches to the digital models, so you aren't locked out forever.
Who it's for: people who already buy every game digitally and catch PlayStation Store sales.
PS5 Pro: only if you have a good 4K TV
The PS5 Pro has a stronger graphics chip, more storage (2TB) and Sony's PSSR upscaling. It does not include a disc drive. The difference shows up on a good 4K TV. On a basic 1080p TV or monitor, most of the extra cost is wasted. The Pro has also been hard to find in stock this season, so watch out for marked-up resellers.
Who it's for: enthusiasts with a 4K TV who play graphically demanding games.
Accessories worth adding
A second DualSense controller
One controller comes in the box. A second one means co-op with a friend, or one charging while you play with the other. Stick with the official DualSense if you want full haptics and adaptive triggers. Cheap knock-offs often skip those features.
A charging station
DualSense battery life isn't amazing in long sessions. A charging dock that holds two controllers keeps them ready and saves your USB ports. Look for one that's made for the DualSense, so the contacts line up.
Extra storage (M.2 SSD)
Big games fill the internal drive fast. The PS5 has an internal M.2 expansion slot. Sony recommends a PCIe Gen4 NVMe SSD with a heatsink, and lists minimum speed requirements on its support site, so check that before you buy. A good SSD lets you keep more games installed instead of re-downloading them.
A headset
Sony's own Pulse line is built for PS5 3D Audio, but almost any decent headset works. See our gaming headsets guide for options.
PlayStation Portal (optional)
The PlayStation Portal is a handheld that streams games from your PS5 over Wi-Fi. It's great if someone else wants the TV. It isn't a standalone console, though, and it needs a strong home connection.
What to skip
- Bundles with junk add-ons. Some third-party "bundles" pad the price with cheap cables and cloths. Compare against the console price on its own.
- Cooling fans that clip onto the console. The PS5 is designed to cool itself. Just leave space around it.
- Reseller markups on the Pro. If it's sold out, wait for a restock instead of paying hundreds over list price.
Buying tips
- Check the exact model name on the listing: "Digital Edition", "with disc drive", or "Pro".
- Buy from Amazon itself or a well-reviewed seller. Check who the seller is, not just the product page.
- Watch holiday sales. Bundles with a game included are often the best value around Black Friday.
Bottom line
Get the PS5 with disc drive unless you're sure you'll only ever buy digital. Only get the Pro if you have a 4K TV to make use of it. Then add a second controller and a charging dock, and you're set for years.
